The NEMWL side suffered their first defeat against Procter & Gamble today. Winning the toss and batting first they were able to consistently get the ball away to the fence as the outfield started off like lightning. Ashley Parker (2-19) and Keith Crerar (2-24) took wickets early on but the middle order held firm and only a late wicket for Ross Harrington (1-8) to a stumping by Tom Common and a run out by Keith Crerar helped slow the innings down finishing on 103-6 off 14 overs.
In reply Ponteland's openers struggled as Dan Wright (7) and Jonny Appleby (8) were unable to get going. With Chris Morgan (0) and Tom Common (6) also falling the side were reduced to 45-5 in the 9th over. A spirited stand of 52 followed with Will Urwin scoring freely but following a slip when turning for a second was struggling to run. (Chris M did warn him about using his old boots, even predicting he would slip on the wicket!) Assisting in the stand and nearly lapping Will on a couple of occasions was Chris Barlow (17*) but his lack of practice was evident with an almost complete lack of timing. With 19 needed from the final over and the field set back round the boundary Ponteland were up against it, Will completed his first senior fifty with a six from the final ball but Pont were left 6 short and P&G head to the top of the early season table.

Ponteland CC started their inaugural season in the NEMWCL with a win over Park House at Heaton Medicals.
With Park House electing to field first, Pont opened with the experienced Keith Crerar and upcoming junior Jonny Furness. Both bowled tight opening spells, taking time to get used to 8 ball overs and the extra push that comes with it!
Wickets kept falling at regular intervals, with spinner Moffat and Urwin bowling tight; Urwin finishing with 2-0-4-3 with his leg-breaks. Park House were eventually bowled out for 55 in 13 overs.
Under 15 Olly Parker also deserves a special mention for his tight spell of 3-0-10-1 - hopefully a sign of good things to come!
Pont then chased down the total quite ruthlessly in 5.5 overs. Stuart Taylor scoring 24 off 17 balls with 4 fours and 1 six; Matt Darwood being equally destructive with 24 off 19 balls with 2 fours and 1 six. Veteran Andy Morgan finished the game with a 4 over long on, continuing his seasons 100% batting strike rate with 8 off 8 balls.
The first match bodes well for the season, with experienced older players and the youth of the club knitting together well in the opening salvo.
