League Laws, Procedures and Guidance Notes, 2024

Any changes to the League Laws are made annually and only after approval at the Annual General Meeting. The attached League Laws include procedures for arranging and reporting of results. Law 9 has been updated to reflect full use of play-cricket and should, in particular, be closely studied and followed.

The concept of penalty runs is adopted, including wides, no balls and ball hitting an illegal object, e.g. helmet.

  • "The bat" includes any part of the full glove or hand holding the bat.
  • A ball bouncing more than once or rolling along the ground before it reaches the batsmen is deemed a No Ball.
  • A ball coming to rest in front of the striker's wicket is now a No Ball followed by the call of Dead Ball with the striker having no right to hit it.
  • In the event of a no ball one run is added, even if runs are also scored.
  • In the event of a wide ball 1 run is awarded even if runs are also scored.
  • To determine whether the batsman is LBW, the umpire must assume that the path of the ball would have continued in the same line if not interrupted.
  • Dangerous and unfair bowling are now classed together, viz: short pitched balls above head height and high full pitched balls above waist height.
  • Wicket Keeper's Gloves: Observance of minimum webbing preferred, not mandatory.
  • For a Fair Delivery in respect of the feet, in the delivery stride:
  1. The bowler's back foot must land within and not touching the return crease appertaining to his stated mode of delivery.
  2. The bowler's front foot must land with some part of the foot, whether grounded or raised (i) on the same side of the imaginary line joining the two middle stumps as the return crease described in (a) above, AND (ii) behind the popping crease.

For convenience, a description of the MCC Code 17 Law changes and the full Laws as now revised may be downloaded here. There is also a guidance for scorers, especially the recording of a no ball.

This is recommended detailed reading but a summary of the impact on NEMWCL Laws is included; please download and share!
