Travellers sent packing

(Posted On Thu 17 July, 2003)

Genetics got back into their winning ways in the league with an impressive win at Seaton Burn. Bowling first, Chris Mee had the opposition reeling at 3 for 9, (all bowled), but Don Farquar and D. smart retrieved the situation somewhat for the Travellers before Allie Douglas stepped in with 4 quick wickets. However, the Travellers still managed to score 108 for 7 off their 16 overs. In reply, Genetics were in trouble with the removal of Steve Kent for a duck (lbw surprise surprise), and then 3 more wickets fell quickly, until Jon Robinson(43) and Jonty Tarbuck(15) stepped to the wicket. They put on an unbeaten 58 runs partnership, which saw Genetics home with plenty of overs to spare.

Scorcher at West Wylam

(Posted On Thu 17 July, 2003)

Genetics played Davipart on a lovely warm Sunday afternoon (it was only 27) at West Wylam. Armed with 7 bowlers, and putting Davipart in to bat, Genetics set about containing the Davipart batsmen. Some tight bowling, and 40 overs later, Davipart had grafted 152 for 7. Allie Douglas, Brian Taylor, and Davy Heslop managed to each take 2 wickets. In reply, Genetics set about attacking the Davipart bowling and although wickets fell regularly, the scoring was so rapid, that the total was reached in the 28th over. Andrew Porteous made an aggressive (if chancy) 55, being particularly harsh on the spinners, while Jonty Tarbuck made an excellent unbeaten 36, and Gez chipped in with 22.

It’s a knockout as Fenham upset Genetics

(Posted On Thu 17 July, 2003)

In a tight match at Heaton, Genetics were defeated by Fenham by 8 runs. Batting first, Fenham punished some short bowling by Chris Mee who went for 31 in his first 2 overs. He came back well in his last over, and took 2 wickets, one of them caught by Grant Mason in the outfield, who managed to knock himself out as he landed awkwardly. Down to 10 men in the field (where was Gareth?) Genetics struggled to contain the scoring and Fenham managed to amass 122 in their 16 overs. Brian Taylor was the best of the bowlers with 2 for 21 in his 4 overs. In reply, Gardner (26) and Porteous (20) started brightly, but the bowling was tight, and when the wickets started to fall, they tumbled with alarming regularity. Mike Cole managed to deflect a high pitched delivery into his face, resulting in 4 stitches in his chin. Raj Rihal made a solid 24 to hold the innings together, and there were 13 runs and 2 wickets in the final over, adding to the excitement but Fenham ran out winners.

Genetics win at Ulgham

(Posted On Mon 7 July, 2003)

Ulgham was the scene for a pleasant cricket match on Sunday, made all the more pleasant by a good win over the local Ulgham side. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Ulgham’s openers looked solid until Chris Mee made the initial breakthrough gaining 2 wickets. Allie Douglas provided good support, and then Brian Taylor, who was the pick of the bowlers, took 3 wickets, including one with his first ball. Andy Goulding and Gary van Doorn cleaned up the tail, while the less said about Gareth Taylor’s bowling effort, the better. Ulgham were all out for 92.
In reply, Genetics looked shaky, although solid innings from Mike Gardner (26), and Raj Rihal (24) helped Genetics on their way. Allie made a quick 15, and it was left to Brian Taylor to hit the winning runs with a glorious four off the first ball faced.

Chris Mee battles in vain at Priors Park

(Posted On Tue 1 July, 2003)

In a very low scoring match at Priors Park, Genetics succumbed to KSOB. Batting first, Genetics lost regular wickets, and it was only the introduction of some part-time bowlers that allowed a score of 68 to be posted. No one made more than 12. In reply, KSOB relaxed, and reversed their batting order, and Chris Mee made immediate inroads taking a wicket in his first over. Wickets continued to tumble, and with first Allie Douglas and then Chris Drought bowling tightly at the other end Genetics had a real chance reducing KSOB to 27 for 7. But victory was not to be however, and an unbroken partnership of 41 saw KSOB claim a win against a valiant Genetics team. Chris Mee’s bowling figures of 8-3-14-6 must be the best for a Genetics player since Mike Gardner took 6 wickets for 5 against some school children in the dark.
