The North-East Mid-Week Cricket League Merz & McLellan Cup was won by the President’s XI for the first time in 5 years. They defeated 2016 League Champions Kirkwood in a superb and close contest.
Kirkwood elected to bat and posted 233-7 off their 40 overs. Opener G Balasundaram hit 102 with two sixes and ten fours in an opening stand of 100 with Ihsan Ashraf . Majid Ansari scored 55 batting at 3. For the President’s XI, skippered by Ross Symington, Chris Fowler took 4-45 off his 8 overs spell aided by three fantastic catches in the deep by Joe Mavin.
A superb opening stand of 96 saw Dan Keegan 45 and Alan Robson 60 sow the seeds of victory for the President’s XI. Ben o’Brien at three scored 43, Ross Symington 30 and Ross Atkinson 39 not out finished the job with only two overs to spare. Ross hit two big sixes to complete the win by 4 wickets. Best bowling figures for Kirkwood was Aqid Shehzad with 2-39 off 6 overs and again there were some very good catches in a tight finish.
In the unavoidable absence of President Malcolm Kennedy, Paul Cheesmond, a former finance director at Merz & McLellan, presented the Cup to skipper Ross Symington. Percy Main CC were excellent hosts and the sunshine most welcome.

A firm if late application has been received for the vacancy in Division 4.
The Management Committee have consulted to accept this late application from Tynemouth BB who will hastily arrange fixtures to slot in to the previous vacancy.
Secretary and first contact is Lee Reed 07834 278 107 and email lreed14@hotmail.co.uk and lee.reed@ncl.ac.uk
Tolerance will be applied to enable current Div 4 clubs to reorganise what would have been blank weeks in their fixtures so that Tynemouth BB games can be incorporated. This in particular applies to Marsden who already have a friendly fixture arranged for Week 1 and may postpone their game with Tynemouth BB.
The additional Week 15 fixtures drawn at the April Meeting are scrapped.
Tynemouth BB will not be entered in to the Cup as this has already been drawn.
Apologies to Div 4 if this causes disruption but the MC hope that rather they will be delighted to now have a full fixtures schedule!

By this Monday at the latest the Week 1 fixtures should be confirmed, as per the Match Procedures, and the Divisional Officer fully informed. He should also be aware in cases where fixtures have been reversed owing to ground unavailability.
Each week of the season the plan is that confirmed fixtures with specified nights, and based on the Divisional Officers reports, will be circulated on the previous Saturday morning.
