Merz and McLellan Cup

(Posted On Sun 26 April, 2015)

The traditional curtain raiser to the North-East Mid-Week Cricket season was played at Percy Main on Sunday.

The President’s XI took to the field and skipper Dave Waters claimed 2 wickets in the first over to see 2014 League Champions Kirkwood under immediate pressure. However Jaswinder Singh joined opener Aqid Shehzad and they took the score in typical flamboyant style to 63 before Aqid became the first of Nick Bharti’s victims, lbw for 30. Singh scored 75 in the total of 158 all out in the 27th of the 40 overs as wickets fell steadily at the other end. Bharti took 5-33 off his 6 overs and Chris Cowe 2-20 off only 2.1 overs.

The President’s XI were confident and started well. Opener Anthony Quarell hit 28 after losing Roy Haygarth for 6 and Jamie Spiller for 10. However, top scorer for the President’s XI was Dan Wright with 42, supported in the mid order with 16 from Ben Harris. The President’s XI were under pressure with Halaldeen taking 4-22 and Amjad Ali 3-36. There was hope to the end as Cowe and Don Catley put on 11 for the last wicket with only another 18 required but Kirkwood made no mistake when Cowe was bowled by Ali.

League President Malcolm Kennedy presented the Merz & McLellan Cup to Amjad Ali after a most enjoyable afternoon in the Percy Main sunshine. Match balls were supplied by sponsor Just Sport. Malcolm was presented with an engraved tankard to commemorate many years of involvement with the league in all capacities since its beginnings in the late 1960’s.
