Matrics Barbarians History

Set up in July 2009, we are a very sociable team with players of mixed ability…from novices to some very good players. The aim of our team is to open the sport up to more people regardless of experience or ability, therefore we try to give everyone an equal opportunity of playing. To help keep the costs down for new players, subsidised kit is available from the club and all pads, gloves etc are provided.

Club History

The team was established in the summer of 2009, and in October 2009 we entered into the Newcastle Cricket Centre Business League, a 6 a-side indoor league which ran until December 2009 and we did reasonably well for our first season and will be in our sixth season in the 2015 competition.

Wednesday 3rd February 2010 was a key moment in our short history as we were elected to join the North-East Mid-Week Cricket League for the Outdoor season and since secured the Medicals ground for our home games throughout the early years. Our first game was on 28th April 2010 and we have come along way since.

In 2014 we were runners up in the league, beaten by one drawn match, and promoted to Division II. This may have been down to a good move to play our matches at Felling whereby we have a full bar, quiz night after and a real social part to the club now. Pop down in 2015 on most Wednesday nights as we have all our home games there (check the league fixtures).

We also are eternal champions of the 2012 West Road Indoor League, we hope they bring it back – champions!

Breaking news 2015 – Chairman Jez Scott also won the team a Years Supply of Yorkshire tea and has donated to Clara Vale for thirsty players on a Saturday – just shows you it is worth entering next year lads and a definite reason to get down and get involved.

Clara Vale, whom a number of the team play for on a Saturday, is the team we share nets with at West Road during the winter and hope to have continued successes between the teams.

By training and playing games throughout the year we hope provide the opportunity for players from a range of backgrounds to discover/rediscover the sport of cricket and become part of a competitive local team.

In order to make this possible we rely on the match fees and nominal membership fees and sponsorship from local firms (any further team sponsors welcome for 2016).

In 2013/14 Procter & Gamble gave us a donation towards new kit and the whole club was established through Lottery Funding in 2010 from Sport England.

Judith Rasmus, Sport England’s Regional Lead for Newcastle Upon Tyne (based in Durham), in the 2010 season said:

The opportunity to try a new sport for the first time is often all a person needs to catch the sporting bug. The Matrics Barbarians Cricket project is a great way for players from a range of backgrounds to try cricket and have a quality sporting experience that will encourage them to stay involved.

Athletes of all abilities need the right equipment so that they can take up a sport, play and compete to their full potential. The funding to provide club equipment/facilities will really help to get more local people taking up cricket.
